We had an excellent Renewal screening last night in Newton, MA at Hebrew College!

Ellen Bernstein teaches a course at HC about the place of nature in the Bible. Weeks ago she called and invited me to join her small class of about 10 students on an evening when she wanted to show Renewal.
I was happy to do it especially since Ellen is the fine author of three of the primary books about Judaism and ecology (Splendor of Creation, Ecology & the Jewish Spirit, Let the Earth Teach You Torah).

After her invitation, Ellen and HC’s Chief Operating Officer, Richard Feczko, sent out a few emails to groups beyond her class (to HC’s Adult Learning Center list and also to Andover Newton Theological Seminary, which shares the physical campus with HC). After they got some positive response they decided to move the screening from a small classroom to a beautiful large auditorium.

Around 150 people showed up!

It was a very engaged, responsive audience. Mostly middle aged and older.
Perhaps 20% under 40 and maybe 25% not Jewish.

Biggest laugh line of the night: Rabbi Andrea’s comment in IPL that she’s never seen a wider coalition, Catholics and Jews, Orthodox Jews sitting with Reform Jews, etc

There was Q&A following the screening and about half the audience stayed for it. Many people expressed desire to take it back to their own synagogues to arrange screenings there. Almost no one spoke about eco-initiatives they are presently engaged in but many seemed interested to learn about how they could become active. One woman has worked with the Massachusetts Interfaith Climate Action Network, and she recommended that people look into it.

One older gentleman from Littleton, MA praised the film for the range of eco topics that were covered and he wondered why population was not among them. I explained that in our research we never came across a religious initiative that was addressing that critical and volatile topic.

A woman in her seventies came up afterwards and said she was too shy to speak publicly. She’s Jewish and not a member of any particular synagogue. Watching the film, she said she felt she had things in common with people in every one of the stories. The differences in religions were no barrier at all to her engagement with the people and initiatives.

Rabbi Judith Kummer (Jewish Chaplaincy Council of Mass) had already seen the film at one of the Museum of Fine Arts screenings. She said she loved it again and she wants to strategize with us about more effective ways to get it out to the Massachusetts Jewish community.

After the screening, people bought 24 DVDs!
