I’ve been producing documentaries, mostly for PBS for more than 25 years. I was lucky to begin my career as a junior members of the team that created the long-running science series, NOVA. Later I made films about anthropology and archaeology, for ODYSSEY and I also worked on The Ring of Truth with MIT professor Phil Morrison. In the 1980s I went to work at Blackside, then the nation’s premier African-American production company where I produced episodes of Eyes on the Prize, the celebrated history of America's civil rights struggles, and The Great Depression. I was series producer of America's War on Poverty, and I'll Make Me a World, an examination of African-American arts in the 20th century; and executive producer of Hopes on the Horizon a feature-length documentary produced with a largely African production team.
Filmmaking, for me has always been an opportunity to inform and inspire an audience. And that is why I wanted to make RENEWAL, in partnership with my colleague, Marty Ostrow. Today, Americans, the entire world needs to know that we can address the environmental challenges we face. The people we met while producing RENEWAL certainly have inspired me. America’s great movements for social transformation – abolition of slavery; promotion of civil rights and immigrant rights; anti-death penalty work; support for the poor and homeless – have all included the commitment of people of faith. Today’s religious-environmental movement is poised to have a significant impact.
I am so eager to hear how the audience for RENEWAL responds!
